FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, April 22, 2024—Midway ISD music programs have once again been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education Award, earning national recognition for 16 consecutive years.
The districts recognized by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation as Best Communities for Music Education demonstrate a commitment to ensuring music learning opportunities are available for every student as part of a well-rounded education starting in elementary and continuing through high school.
As one of the top communities for music education in the country, Midway’s recognition year after year is due to the ongoing support and dedication of students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community members who continue to show support for Midway Fine Arts programs.
“Sixteen years ago, we didn’t have 8,000 kids,” Midway ISD Superintendent Dr. Chris Allen said. “It’s one thing to be good, but to sustain excellence while growing is a challenge for any industry.”
Midway ISD Fine Arts Director Darrell Umhoefer has played a pivotal role in the district’s ability to maintain its high standards amidst growth. He has been with the district since 2001, serving as Midway High School band director before taking on a role in the fine arts department in 2006.
“We would not be in the position we’re in with 16 consecutive years being recognized as one of the best music education communities in the country if it weren’t for the consistent support and loyalty of Darrell Umhoefer,” Allen said. “Not just to our students, parents, and the school district, but to making sure that we never lose sight of the importance of the arts.”
